Celebrating Women’s Art and Culture in West Orange, NJ – An Art Exhibit by Women of Women

In commemorating Women’s History Month, The Gaelen Gallery in West Orange, NJ curated a fine art exhibition by local women artists for all to appreciate.

These women artists have created artwork that have embodied either themselves as subjects or other women subjects through the visual art medium. This current art show by women artists invites you and the viewer to engage with these powerful art pieces, to celebrate the talent and creativity of women artists.

This exhibition serves as both a reflection on the past and to acknowledge how far women have come. The Chair of the West Orange Arts Council, Patricia Mitrano, attended the show during its opening reception. Patricia said, “I was delighted to see the beauty in all the art displayed at this show. When we look back into art history, It was amazing for me to recognize how far women have come in various men-dominated fields, such as in the Fine Arts. There was a time when women were not permitted to train or attend art school.”

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Gaelen Gallery at JCC MetroWest, 760 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052 presents “Women by Women”, an exhibit by women artists who portray women in their work, using a variety of media and styles.

Many of the participating artists are quite well-known and are NJ State Council on the Arts Artist Fellowship winners. Participating artists are Sybil Archibald, Aliza Augustine, Janet Boltax, Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Ellen Hark, Barbara Minch, Leslie Nobler, Sarah Petruziello, Sharon Sayegh, Heidi Sussman and Nette Forne Thomas.

Gaelen Gallery director, Lisa Suss, said, “The diverse media used in “Women by Women” are frequently those associated with traditional women’s work, but the art is often symbolic and contemporary, adding a mythological or historical context to the subject. Sometimes a woman is the focus of the piece and occasionally she is part of a greater theme, but she always inspires the artist’s creativity.”

Patricia Mitrano said, “As I cruised through this art show defining the women of the arts, I can’t help to recognize the resilience and determination of women artists who against societal forces have forged their own paths and transformed the art world to where it is today.

This exhibition displays contemporary women artists exploring not only various art media but also pathways to female creativity and inspiration. Also, It invokes me to reminiscence of notable famous women artists that were trailblazers. Such as Frida Kahlo, Mary Cassatt, Louise Bourgeois, and Georgia O’Keeffe. They have paved the way for the future artists and helped empower young women to find their place in the art world.”

This art show, “Women by Women” opened on Sunday. March 3rd, and will end on April 28th. The Gaelen Gallery is open during all JCC hours. For more information, contact Gaelen Gallery director, Lisa Suss at 973-530-3413 or lsuss@jccmetrowest.org
